Which Tumble Dryers Are Being Phased Out in 2027 ?
From 19 January 2027, new UK ecodesign requirements will significantly change the types of standalone tumble dryers that manufacturers and suppliers can place on the Great Britain market.
The new regulations introduce stricter minimum energy efficiency standards, meaning many traditional vented and condenser tumble dryers will no longer meet the required criteria.
The changes are designed to encourage more energy-efficient appliances, helping households reduce electricity consumption and running costs.
Will Condenser and Vented Tumble Dryers Disappear ?
The new standards are technology-neutral, meaning they do not specifically ban a particular type of tumble dryer. Instead, every qualifying model must meet the new Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) threshold of 85 or less.
However, the Government expects these requirements to effectively phase out most traditional vented and condenser dryers, as their energy consumption is generally too high to meet the new standards.
Highly efficient condenser models could theoretically still qualify, but heat pump technology is expected to dominate the market.
Existing appliances already placed on the market before the deadline may continue to be sold while stocks last, subject to the applicable transitional arrangements.
Do the New Regulations Affect Washer-Dryers ?
No. The new 2027 ecodesign requirements discussed here apply to standalone household tumble dryers, not washer-dryers.
Washer-dryers operate differently and are covered by separate energy efficiency and product regulations.
This means you will still be able to purchase washer-dryers under their applicable regulations.
What Does This Mean for Customers ?
If you're considering buying a new tumble dryer, heat pump technology is certainly worth looking at.
With traditional vented and many condenser models expected to disappear from the market, heat pump dryers are likely to become the main choice for households looking for a standalone tumble dryer.

Please note: The new requirements apply to Great Britain, rather than being a blanket UK-wide ban.
